"Your first love isn't the first person you give your heart to- it's the first one who breaks it"

Background of the book

Sad Girls is the first novel written by an international best selling author Lang Leav who is much known by her heartfelt poems and prose. The story goes by a very common and timely reality love affair of lovers. Like most love affairs begets a common ground: Lies, Cheating, a story of confused young love, dark secrets and a collision of tragedy.

Book Synopsis

Have you ever lie about something? About someone? Maybe lie about yourself? Lies- are words that do nothing but destroy a reputation, image or worst case scenario, destroy a life. It all started with a lie; or maybe it's just what Audrey thought. Like a wildfire of dying ember and blackened twigs, no one knows where the first spark of lit started, maybe except Audrey. It was three weeks before her eighteenth birthday when she was afflicted by anxiety. For sure, it has something to do with the wicked lie she told to her best friends; Lucy and Candela. A lie sworn by the three of them yet known by the whole town. Days later, her classmate Ana was found dead in her bathtub. Just as Audrey's world begin to spin out of control and collapse, she met Rad. A boy of mysteries and secrecy she's unaware of and fell in love with.

Book Review

When I first saw the book trending on twitter, I immediately expected it to be an exceptional book knowing that Lang is a known writer. I've read her pieces and I have to admit how good of a writer she is. So from that viewpoint alone, you can assume that I had a very high expectation; and I really had. Basing from the title "Sad Girls", I assumed it is marketed for girls and it is something boys would never bother reading of; and I was right. The main character "Audrey" has all the "girl quality" (if that makes sense); not to mention the typical "teenage girl" with all the glam and "girl squad thing" but I have to admit that it's kind of clichè but I liked it. Audrey represents a character girls can relate to (with her personality not by her story in the book).

Much more of that, I liked how the story focuses only to a certain point of view which is the main characters' point of view. I'm a reader who don't want things to be complicated and I hate books that left me confused or hanging because of different point of views. There is enough background (story) about the other characters and the transition from one character to the other is smooth that you really get to know each one of them.

Another thing that I really liked is how Lang managed to write a narrative about "death or suicide" and "cheating" in a very artistic way. Some might say "Lang is romanticizing suicide and cheating" but I didn't perceived it that way. In fact, I thought it reflected a possibility or should I say the "cons" of being in that situation; on how serious and devastating cheating and suicide is. Subjectively, I think Lang was able to raise awareness at the same time produce an aesthetic output. Moreover, her mataphors are on point as well.

In addition, the plot twist of the story is definitely the focal point of it. I did not expect such to happen. It definitely twisted the whole story in the most unexpected way. I have no words to describe how gagged I am at that moment. An A plus for that!

You might be wondering what aspect of the book I didn't liked, well I only have a few though. Firstly, I didn't liked how Lang puts too much detail or description to every situation a certain character does or acts (like unnecessary 'flowery' words). Maybe because of her poetic side? That she's known for that identity?

Secondly, I am a bit disappointed on how Lang ended the story because I was expecting a different ending because of the conflicts that occured. It left me a lot of questions like is that it? Why are they still together? I want a different ending! To sum it up, the ending is kind of unrealistic for me.

Lastly, I just hope it's marketed for all readers.

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4/5

Do I recommend it? Yes of course I do! Especially if you are a fan of Lang Leav's works, you'll surely enjoy this different and new side of her.

That's it for now gals, I hope you had a fun time!
